Eleven pre-teen girls in Ballet Hispanico’s Spanish dance class stand at attention at one edge of the room, heels up, ruffled skirts pulled at the hip and chins pushed forward. While some faces betray intense concentration, others are ready to go ahead and charge.
“I want bullfighter girls,” cheered their teacher, Sandra Rivera, before starting their Paso Doble music. “Let me see a beautiful position… Enjoy yourselves!”
My school is among the noted for our partnership with The Local - Fort Greene and the New York Times. When a Journalism School partners with a local media outlet - everyone wins! Students get a chance to gain clips - and media outlets get investigative (although sometimes stumblingly investigative) journalism.
Emily Fisher Landau donated over 400 pieces of bold American Artwork to The Whitney Museum of American Art – on display now. She began her love of forward-thinking art as a volunteer at The Whitney almost 50 years ago. When they collected, she collected, and now the Whitney is offering anyone in New York City the opportunity to see one collector’s vision in one space. The Emily Fisher Landau exhibit is on now though May, but many of her works will still be displayed on the walls of the Whitney.
See works from Robert Mapplethorpe, Ed Ruscha, Warhol, Nan Goldin and more…

President Obama’s State of the Union appealed for a stronger emphasis on sciences. This CBS piece explores that idea to the Nth degree.
Foreign students come to this country and then bring their smarts back home. But we can cultivate our own educated youth - by helping out all those kids who are super smart but fall through the cracks because of part-time jobs and a lack of inspiration.
There are still good people out there. And you have to wonder - when you help another person, are you helping them forever or just for that moment in time?
Check out this great letter to the editor for The Local, Fort Greene about a woman, a shoplifter, and 9 cans of dog food.
